RPO Z28 created a legend from the beginning. After all, everyone knew Chevrolet was not racing, yet somehow this high-winding very exclusive V-8 package showed up on Camaro order forms starting in 1967. Once Mark Donohue and Roger Penske teamed up using one, they proved it was just about perfect for the SCCA Trans Am series. At any rate, regardless of corporate edicts stating otherwise, Chevrolet’s Camaro was available for a number of possible racing combinations by 1969. The Camaro offered here is a true Z28 package and the beneficiary of a frame-off restoration. Equipped with the correct DZ-suffix 302/290 HP engine, it also features an authentic Winters aluminum cross-ram intake manifold with dual Holley 4-barrel carburetors. Underneath is the fabled chambered-exhaust layout that eliminated conventional mufflers; this was only available for a limited time due to issues with state inspection rules and is a special part on any 1969 Z28. Behind the factory’s 5.0L race-derived engine is a Muncie 4-speed transmission with a 12-bolt differential out back. Built for handling ease, this car is equipped with power steering and power brakes with front discs. The outside is covered in correct 57 Fathom Green paint, featuring white stripes with an accompanying white vinyl top for a stellar appearance. Other body components include the ZL2-special ducted hood, front and rear spoilers, Z28 badging, Rally wheels and Goodyear Polyglas tires. Meanwhile, inside is a chrome Hurst floor shifter, tachometer, center fuel gauge, cushioned vinyl bucket seats and wood-grain steering wheel. Provenance on this Z28 includes its Protect-O-Plate, a Letter of Authenticity from Camaro Specialties and the owner's manual. Winning SCCA championship in 1968 and 1969 was part of the RPO Z28 legacy, and these specialty street releases built upon that. Featuring an eye-catching combination of color and accessories, as well as all-important documentation, this one is a winner in its own right.
